The Green House Story

We are Gabriel & Bryan and have both lived in the community of Huarán for over five years.
Gabriel came from Argentina to run a big hotel in Huarán. The plan was to try for three months, but the beautiful landscape and kind people made him feel at home in the Valley.
Bryan, after a very meaningful trip in Peru, decided to sell what he had in England and come back for something new.
We both met at the hotel after Bryan and some friends in common visited for lunch.

Two years later, after enjoying amazing walks and calming peacefulness that living in Huaran brought, we decided to share our experiences with others and the idea of The Green House was born.  We wanted to build a place of tranquility for people to spend quality time, without being isolated, with places to walk, explore and to feel part of the community.
We found the most perfect piece of land, with stream flowing at the back and the beautiful view of the Pitusiray. It was surrounded by trees, in harmony with our feelings and the country side, and yet only two minutes walk from the main road.
We tried to keep the scenery intact, by putting first two low walls in a wave-like shape. The wooden playfully shaped fence would make you feel inside, while you could still enjoy the beauty of the world outside. We spent the first year designing. It was a combination of Gabriels creativity together with our focus to use all the natural elements and materials possible. We wanted to use the natural light from the sun rising and setting and took our time to generally get a feel of where the buildings would be best accommodated.
We used all local builders who we had known previously and all local natural materials as far as possible. Adobe walls, stones, mud, natural paint dyes, eucalyptus wood and solar water panels, achieving the perfect harmony with nature. The work started May 2007 and with the help of our builders learning to embody our ideas and bring their own artistic points, we all worked in union to make our dream happen.
The vision was for only four rooms for a maximum of 10 people, to give the guests places to have their quiet space. We designed a common area with high ceilings and a full glass frontage for the best possible views from anywhere in the room. Bryans love for gardening, resulted in a large flowered garden leading to our house, with places to sit, relax and enjoy the mountains, the hummingbirds and butterflies. There is a quiet area at back close to the stream and a place for quiet meditation. Creating only a few rooms would also give us space and time to provide a friendly and interactive service. The Green House would feel like a home from home.
We opened our doors to a few insisting passengers before the hotel was finished and after they left rested and happy, we opened the guesthouse officially in May 2008. We have been very fortunate to have had the most wonderful guests and with the help of their experiences, reactions and comments posted on trip advisor, we are achieving our aim.
To make 'The Greenhouse family' complete and lively, Laika decided to move in with us. Laika was a completely neglected dog from one of our neighbors, who loved to come in for some company and food. She basically made us buy her from her owner for 10 soles and that was the best investment we made. She grew out to be our top tour guide for guests who want to go for a walk to the waterfall and most of the people who get to know her find in her a great companion. A year later, our local friends gave us Paco, a small cocker spaniel. He still is the baby (and most spoiled one!) of the family. Gabriel fell in love with Yana, a very small and cute black baby Labrador - Husky. She now is bigger than all of us and makes this family complete.

Why call it The Green House?

We could say that the biggest reason for choosing the name “The Green House” had to do with our choice to join forces with nature, using all the eco friendly materials possible and to flow with the natural beauty. The truth is, while we were waiting for ten hours on the airport in Lima for our connection to England, brainstorming about the name didn’t get us anywhere, so Bryan decided to read a bit of his book; The Green House, by Mario Vargas Llosa. And then it all came together.
